Who are we?

Originally incorporated in 1977 and updated in 2018, the Friends of the Lewis Cooper Jr. Memorial Library has gone through many changes, but throughout it all, the vision has remained the same.

The Friends of the Cooper Library exists to support and promote the library and to encourage, engage, and foster in its members not only a love of reading and education, but a curiosity about and love for the community that surrounds them.

What we do!

The Friends support the Library by raising money through membership dues and annual book sales to fund many important services and programs at the library branches such as:

·         Refreshments at library programs!

·         Sponsor children’s performers and programs!

·         Awards at summer reading programs!

·         Library equipment and facility improvements!

·         Help with publicity and community outreach!

·         Assist with fundraising and programs!

The Friends also support the Library through volunteer opportunities and work on specific events, such as the annual CaddyStacks Mini Golf Event or Carriage Rides during the Victorian Front Porch Tour.

Our Project

Music is a global language that creates community, connection, and a sense of place. Music is so powerful that a few notes from a song can spark emotions and memories, taking the participant on a journey. Additionally, music helps to build reasoning skills and cognitive development while reducing stress. Further, playing music is a fun activity that can be shared across generations. Playing music with others fosters respect while building community. The Friends of the Lewis Cooper Jr. Memorial Library seek to install a musical playground on the grounds of the new Opelika Public Library.

The addition of a musical playground on the grounds of the new library will add an outdoor play element to the existing green space. It is interactive and all ages and abilities can play.
