Built upon the history of Alabama agriculture to sustain its citizens, Opelika Grows began in 2012. O Grows installs and maintains gardens, as well as provides related programming. Its gardens serve as outdoor classrooms, allowing children and adults to pursue life-long learning and civic engagement. As an effort in localism, Opelika Grows seeks to model an approach to civic engagement that relies on local capital and capacity to address local needs. School reform, hunger relief, and city beautification are not specific to any one city but every city has the potential to leverage the learning potential of gardens in service of community need.
Your gift will support improvements to the parking lot and green space at the O Grows Community Garden. The area is currently prone to flooding and the run off empties into the garden workspace. Funds are needed to cover the existing parking lot with a gravel and limestone mix. Additionally, a butterfly garden will be installed along the fence line that borders the parking area, beautifying the area and attracting pollinators to the gardens.
