Who we are:

A 501(c)3 non-profit organization chartered by the City of Opelika whose mission is to: promote opportunities for bicycle pathways, bicycle recreation and bicycle transportation.

Bike infrastructure such as bike racks and public repair stations are visible proof of a community’s support for travel and recreation on bikes. The Opelika Bicycle Advisory Committee’s goal is to purchase one station per year to serve citizens who choose to ride their bikes. Our 2022 Campaign will purchase a Dero Fix-It Station for the new Opelika Library.
Project Summary:

With the adoption of the 2021 Opelika Bike/Pedestrian MasterPlan, connectivity of people and places by bike is now codified with all future roadways and facilities required to meet those standards. The Opelika Bicycle Advisory Committee’s mission is “to promote opportunities for bicycle pathways, bicycle recreation and bicycle transportation.” Bike infrastructure such as bike racks and public repair stations are visible proof of a community’s support for travel and recreation on bikes.

OBAC successfully fundraised for Opelika’s first public repair station through the 2021 Opelika Giving Day now in use on Railroad Avenue in front of Red Clay Brewing Company, headquarters for the Annual Johnny Ray century bike ride. A second public repair station is planned for the new Library. It is hoped that OBAC may be able to add on unit per year to future sites.

How this project will benefit the community:

A public bike repair station such as the DERO Fix-It has tools for adjustments, tire inflation and simple repairs to serve citizens who choose to ride their bikes to the Library. Future Library programming (successful in other Bicycle Friendly Communities) such as “Book-a-Bike” Bike-Share, adult bike education or “Bike the Branches” recreational rides are potential spin-offs of supporting cyclists at the Library.
